Day 1. Arrival in Medan – The Gateway to Sumatra

As your plane touches down at Kualanamu International Airport, you’ll be met by our friendly driver, ready to usher you into a world of adventure. Your journey begins with a comfortable ride from Medan to Hotel Deli River, nestled along the serene banks of the Deli River.

Medan, the capital of North Sumatra, awaits your exploration. As the fourth most populous city in Indonesia, it’s your gateway to the captivating culture and natural wonders of Sumatra Island. This bustling metropolis is a perfect launching point for your Sumatran adventure.

Nestled 12 kilometres outside the city center, Hotel Deli River offers a peaceful city escape. This charming hotel is the perfect sanctuary away from the city’s hustle and bustle. Early Arrivals:

If your flight brings you to Medan early in the day, you can embark on our signature Medan City Architectural tour (Price on Application), offering a glimpse into the historical heart of Medan’s captivating architecture.

“Parijs van Sumatra”, namely the city of Medan. The city known as Tanah Deli was popular among Dutch people from the end of the 19th century to the mid-20th century.

Our tour comprises of four unique routes that explore the timeless beauty of Malay, Chinese, and Dutch pre-war colonial buildings. You’ll have the chance to immerse yourself in the city’s history and architecture, guided by our self-written architectural city guide, “Tours through Historic Medan and its surroundings.” 

During this city tour, you’ll visit iconic landmarks like the Mesjid Raya (Great Mosque), Maimoon Palace, Kesawan Street, Tjong A Fie Mansion, and historic colonial buildings including the Old Town Hall (Balai Kota) and the Post Office (Kantor Pos).

Day 2. From Medan to Lake Toba by the plantation route

Tranquil Shores of Danau Toba

Today your adventure leads you from Medan to the captivating Lake Toba with a 2-night stay on the mystical island of Samosir. Along the way, you’ll traverse through the enchanting landscapes of North Sumatra, and your journey is adorned with the old-world charm of Pematang Siantar.

Through Fields and History:

Your scenic route unveils vast vistas of endless palm tree plantations, rubber orchards, and cacao fields. As you meander through the city of Pematang Siantar, we recommend pausing for a breath of history at the charming Hotel Siantar, a delightful relic dating back to 1912.

Parapat: Gateway to Lake Toba:

In the afternoon, you’ll reach Parapat, a charming town perched on the cusp of Lake Toba. Here, you’ll embark on a fascinating journey across the sparkling waters of Lake Toba by ferry, with your vehicle joining you on this tranquil voyage.

Samosir Island: Where Adventure Awaits:

Your overnight stay takes you directly to the lakeside on the captivating Samosir Island. Nestled within the heart of Lake Toba, Samosir Island beckons with its serene beauty, vibrant culture, and a wealth of exciting experiences that await.

 Day 3. Samosir Island excursion

Relic of Batak Toba Culture

The natural wonder of Lake Toba covers an area of approximately 1,130 square kilometres. Formed by a super-volcanic eruption that occurred around 75,000 years ago, it left behind a caldera that eventually filled with water. 

Samosir Island lies at the heart of Lake Toba, a popular tourist destination known for its rich cultural heritage and natural attractions. The island is dotted with traditional Batak villages. You will experience the unique Batak culture, explore ancient stone tombs of Tomok, megalithic sites and traditional Batak architecture in Ambarita.

Ulos is the traditional textile of the Batak people in North Sumatra. You will have the opportunity to appreciate the traditional craftmanship of the skilled weavers that each use traditional techniques passed down through generations to create vibrant and intricate handwoven textiles. 

Lake Toba and Samosir are home to several waterfalls. You will travel around lush green hills, Mount Pusuk Buhit and have magnificent views of the lake to reach these tranquil cascades, nestled amidst lush greenery. 

 

Day 4. From Samosir Island to Berastagi – A Tapestry of Nature and Culture 

Sipiso Piso Waterfall

Prepare for a day filled with natural wonders and cultural richness as you leave the serene beauty of Samosir Island behind. Your journey will take you to Berastagi, an idyllic town with a picturesque mountainous backdrop.

The Enchanting Sipiso Piso Waterfall:

As you embark from your lodging in Tuk Tuk, Samosir, don’t miss the opportunity to discover the mesmerising Sipiso Piso Waterfall. Depending on your fitness level, you can choose to take a leisurely 1.5-hour walk to the base of this majestic waterfall and back, immersing yourself in the lush, vibrant surroundings.

A Glimpse of Tradition at Dokan Village:

Our route to Berastagi passes through the traditional Batak village of Dokan. Take a moment to explore the cultural heritage and experience the warmth of the Batak people.

As you arrive in Berastagi, your day continues with the promise of more adventures. Depending on the time, you might visit the vibrant Fruit & Flower Market or ascend Gundaling Hill to enjoy panoramic views of this charming town nestled amid Mount Sibayak, Mount Sinabung, rolling hills and plantations. Your overnight stay in Berastagi will open doors to a world of natural beauty and scenic mountain landscapes.

Day 5. From Berastagi to Medan – Fond Farewells
