Day 1. Arrival into Medan

Upon arrival at the airport, we extend a warm Indonesian greeting. Your adventure commences with seamless ease as our attentive team whisks you away to the riverside haven of Hotel Deli River. Day 2. Medan city tour – Bukit Lawang.
After a night’s rest at Hotel Deli River, it’s time to continue our adventure. Today, we explore the lively streets of Medan, once celebrated by the Dutch as the ‘Parijs van Sumatra’ (Paris of Sumatra). Our signature Medan City Architectural Tour provides a window into history by showcasing the city’s remaining Dutch, English, Chinese, and Malay architectural marvels.
Your expedition then continues towards Bukit Lawang, a name that resonates with nature’s lovers. This remarkable haven nestles on the fringes of Gunung Leuser National Park, teeming with significance as a gateway to the pristine wilderness.
Your drive winds through palm oil plantations. The road to Bukit Lawang takes approximately three hours, exclusive of stops, offering a firsthand view of Sumatra’s lifeblood – palm oil production.
As you reach Bukit Lawang, immerse yourself in the town. Stroll the streets, explore its souvenir stores, and admire the works of local artisans. Delight in a scenic sunset over the river, offering an enchanting backdrop for your evening, followed by dinner with riverside views. Bukit Lawang’s beauty is unparalleled, and it’s only the beginning of your Sumatran journey.
Day 3. Bukit Lawang Jungle Trek and Wildlife Encounters
Today, we venture into the heart of the captivating Gunung Leuser National Park, a UNESCO-listed treasure, rich in biodiversity. Here, the adventure beckons with an exciting 3-hour jungle trek, led by our experienced guides, skilled in the art of wildlife spotting.
For the intrepid, there’s an option to extend your jungle experience to a 6-hour expedition and/or glide through the rainforest via river tubing. Prices for these experiences are available upon request.
The jungle, alive with sights and sounds, reveals its enchanting inhabitants, including the iconic orangutans, gibbons, monkeys and rhinoceros hornbills.
Day 4. Bukit Lawang – Berastagi
Leaving Bukit Lawang behind, we embark on a scenic 4.5-hour drive to Berastagi. Our journey unveils the majestic Mount Sinabung, a powerful presence in this region. Berastagi, perched on fertile volcanic soils, is a hub of agriculture, boasting lush vegetation and a cooler climate. Upon arrival, we immerse ourselves in the local culture with a visit to the bustling Fruit and Flower Market. If time allows, we savour the breathtaking sunset at Gundaling Hill. As the day concludes, we retire for the night at the comfortable Grand Mutiara or similar accommodation.
Day 5. Berastagi – Samosir.
Departing Berastagi, we embark on a picturesque journey to Lake Toba via Parapat, a scenic 4.5-hour drive followed by a 1-hour passenger ferry ride. Along the way, we pass through Dokan, a traditional Karo village, and the striking Sipiso Piso waterfall, where you can take a refreshing break. Lake Toba, one of the world’s largest and deepest crater lakes, holds a fascinating history and awe-inspiring beauty. Upon arrival, we settle into our overnight accommodation in Tuk Tuk, Samosir, overlooking the serene lake. We rest for the night at Tabo Cottages or similar, surrounded by the tranquil beauty of Lake Toba.
Day 6. Samosir – tour to Tomok, Ambarita, and Simanindo.
Today, we embark on a Samosir Island tour, a place steeped in cultural and natural wonders. Our journey takes us to Tomok, home to ancient stone tombs of the Batak Kings, and the lively Ambarita, a traditional village with unique stone chairs used for settling disputes. Here, we visit the Ulos weavers, where intricate traditional textiles are crafted. We’ll also explore the beauty of some of Samosir’s waterfalls. Samosir, an island within Lake Toba, was formed following a dramatic supervolcanic eruption, offering both geological history and natural splendor. We conclude our day’s exploration by returning to Tabo Cottages or a similar retreat, where the serene lake lulls us to a peaceful night’s rest.
Day 7. Samosir – own program.
Samosir Island has a lot to offer! Take beautiful walks over the island, swim in the largest volcanic crater lake in the world, try out the local Batak delicacies, and explore the arts and crafts. In the evening you can enjoy a performance of the Toba singers in a local café (optional).
Day 8. Samosir – Padang Sidempuan.
Today’s journey takes us from the tranquil shores of Tuk Tuk to the bustling city of Padang Sidempuan, a pivotal transit point connecting the northern and western expanses of Sumatra. En route, our approximately 6-hour drive, complemented by a scenic passenger ferry ride, allows for glimpses of authentic local life, with the possibility of exploring the vibrant traditional market in Balige. Padang Sidempuan serves as a vital gateway; not only does it facilitate smooth travel between Sumatra’s diverse regions, but it’s also the launchpad for ventures into the Barumun Nagari Wildlife Sanctuary (BNWS), renowned for its Sumatran tiger breeding program. This region, home to the critically endangered Tapanuli orangutan, offers an extraordinary opportunity to witness nature’s wonders up close. Our overnight abode at Transit Hotel Mega Permata ensures a restful stay before further explorations unfold.
Day 9. Padang Sidempuan – Bukittinggi.
Today’s journey takes us from Padang Sidempuan to Bukittinggi, a scenic drive that lasts approximately 7.5 hours, not including the delightful stops and breaks we make along the way.
As we traverse the landscape, we pass through Bonjol, a site of special significance where we cross the equator, marking our transition to the southern hemisphere. It’s a memorable moment on this adventure.
Upon reaching Bukittinggi, our next overnight destination, we’re greeted by a town with a unique cultural trait. Here, the Minangkabau people follow a matrilineal system, which means that property and family names are passed down through the female line. This distinctive tradition adds depth to our exploration of Sumatran culture.
We settle in for 4-night stay at the Santika Hotel, or similar, in Bukittinggi, where you can relax and rejuvenate for the next chapter of your Sumatran journey.
Nature enthusiasts, be prepared for an exciting opportunity – the Rafflesia flower trek. This adventure will lead you deep into the heart of the jungle, in search of one of the world’s largest and most captivating flowers.
If you arrive early enough and the flower is in bloom, you may have the opportunity to join this trek. It’s a unique chance to witness the grandeur of the Rafflesia flower, provided it has blossomed during your visit. These incredible flowers require very specific growing conditions, making such an encounter a special and rare experience. Price on Application.
Day 10. Bukittinggi – city tour and own program.
Your exploration of Bukittinggi continues, a town known for its captivating highlights. The day includes a Bukittinggi city excursion, featuring a visit to the former Fort de Kock, a place that holds historical significance. After the tour, you’ll have the afternoon for your own program. You’ll spend another restful night at Santika Hotel or a similar comfortable retreat.
Mount Marapi is a towering and highly active volcano, standing at 2,891 meters above sea level in West Sumatra, Indonesia. Its name, meaning “Mountain of Fire,” reflects its volcanic nature. This stratovolcano is frequently sought out by trekkers and climbers who are drawn to its challenging slopes and the chance to witness volcanic activity. As you drive through Bukittinggi, the views of Mount Marapi offer a breathtaking backdrop, emphasising the dynamic beauty and peril of this remarkable peak.
Day 11. Bukittinggi – Sianok Canyon & Silver
Ngarai Sianok, often referred to as Sianok Canyon, is a natural wonder that graces the landscape near Bukittinggi. This breathtaking canyon is a deep and lush gorge, flanked by steep cliffs covered in rich green vegetation. Situated in the Minangkabau Highlands of West Sumatra, your day will begin at the observation platform overlooking the canyon.
The Japanese Tunnel holds historical significance as a relic from World War II, constructed during the Japanese occupation of Indonesia. This underground network was used for various purposes, including storage and defense. Today, it stands as a living testament to the region’s wartime past, providing insight into a different facet of its history. For those eager to explore further, it is possible to visit the tunnel after Sianok Canyon platform.
Afterwards, we move on to Kota Gadang, a hidden gem for those seeking beautifully detailed silverware and a chance to witness the craftsmanship behind these intricate pieces.

Day 12. Butkinggi – excursion to Lake Maninjau
Day 12 invites you for an excursion from Bukittinggi to the tranquil shores of Lake Maninjau, a gem nestled within the picturesque landscapes of West Sumatra. This ancient crater lake, formed by a volcanic eruption thousands of years ago, cradles breathtaking beauty. It’s a place where nature thrives in harmony with local life. As you visit Lake Maninjau, you’ll be captivated by its serenity, framed by lush hills and serene waters. Take a leisurely stroll along its shores, breathe in the fresh mountain air, and absorb the peaceful ambiance. It’s a moment of tranquility on your journey throughout this region. In the afternoon you drive back to Bukittinggi. Overnight stay in hotel Santika or similar.
Day 13. Bukittinggi – Harau.
As your journey unfolds, we bid farewell to Bukittinggi and set our course for Harau. A brief 1.5-hour drive takes us through the scenic landscapes of West Sumatra.
In the beautiful region of Harau, the captivating landscapes of West Sumatra truly come to life. This area is renowned for its stunning rock formations, likened to the majestic landscapes of Yosemite, with towering cliffs and lush vegetation surrounding the iconic Harau Valley.
The lush jungle surrounding this area is a haven for adventurous treks and rock climbing, to explore the stunning formations. Additionally, the charming village of Harau offers a glimpse into local Minangkabau culture, making this region a blend of natural beauty and cultural exploration.
Upon arrival, you’ll settle into your overnight abode at Abdi Homestay, where the serenity of nature will lull you into a peaceful night’s rest.
Day 14. Harau – Padang.
Embrace the final leg of your journey, leaving the enchanting landscapes of Harau. Your path leads to Padang, a culinary gem famous for Rendang and Padang food.
Located in West Sumatra, Padang is renowned for its culinary delights. At the heart of Padang cuisine is “Rendang,” a dish often hailed as the number one dish in the world. Rendang is a rich and fragrant meat dish, typically made with beef, that’s slow-cooked in a flavorful coconut milk and a mixture of lemongrass, galangal, garlic, turmeric, ginger, and chilies. The result is tender, succulent meat with an explosion of complex, spicy flavors. It’s a must-try dish that showcases the exquisite blend of Indonesian spices, making Padang a paradise for food enthusiasts.
This picturesque coastal drive lasts approximately 4.5 hours, offering picturesque glimpses of the coastline. As you venture, make a stop at the Minangkabau Palace and the historic rock inscriptions in Hindu-Indian Sanskrit language in Batusangkar. Witness the natural splendor of Anai Waterfall and Valley. Time permitting, you can visit Pariangan Village, nestled at the base of Mt. Marapi and renowned as one of the most beautiful villages in the region. Your day concludes with a restful night at Hotel D’Oxville (or similar), where you can reflect the day’s memories.
Day 15. Padang.
Your incredible journey has come full circle, and it’s time to bid farewell to the captivating beauty of West Sumatra. Our comfortable transfer will take you from the hotel to the airport, marking the end of this memorable adventure.
But remember, Padang is not just a destination; it’s a gateway to further exploration. For the intrepid traveler, it offers access to the untouched Rimba, a vast wilderness awaiting discovery. Alternatively, you can venture to the exotic Mentawai Islands, known for their unique culture and stunning surfing spots. The end of one adventure is only the beginning of the next.
