The village of Prapat came under Dutch rule in 1904. In Balige, near Toba Batak, a city on the southwest tip of Lake Toba, the legendary historical figure Si Singga Mangaraja lived. He was the leader of the last major Batak revolt against the Dutch at the end of the nineteenth century. (Si Singga Mangaraja)

Holiday village

In the twenties of the 19th century, Parapat became a holiday destination with many bungalows built by the plantation companies for their staff. The oldest existing hotel is Hotel Prapat. In 1948 Soekarno, Hatta and Agus Salim were interned in the beautiful Pasanggrahan (Guesthouse) ‘Villa Marihat’ on the Parapat peninsula. This house is open for visitors.
