The restaurant is located approximately 15 kilometres outside Medan in a beautiful tropical environment, on a rolling terrain with fascinating views on paddy rice fields and on the borders of the Deli River. The restaurant is built in traditional Batak Simalungun architecture, divided in two areas, a green and yellow dining hall. Furtheron are two terraces. Guests can make nice walks over the grounds, down to the Deli River.

The name "Omlandia" derives from the student society "Omlandia", established in 1837 in Groningen, the Netherlands. "Omlandia" refers to the countryside around a town, in this case the thousand years old Dutch city of Groningen. The student society chose that name because its members, students at Groningen University, originated from the surrounding province of Groningen.

The Groningen flag, as used by "Omlandia", resembles the flag of the neighbouring province of Friesland. But while the Friesian flag consists of waterlilies, the Groningen flag consists of hearts, with stripes running in the opposite direction of the Friesian flag.

As "Omlandia" already has existed for over 170 years, the history of the society and its members are many. Books have been written about the society and two steamships bear the name "Omlandia". Former member have spread all over the world. Restaurant "Omlandia" is meant to be a token of respresentation of Groningen culture in the midst of Sumatran environment.
