TOP

Friday 25 February
In the Tembacau Deli Hospital we spoke to several patients about the artificial legs and the rehabilitation. It is possible that 3 patients will go to the rehabilitation centre Harapan Jaya in Pematang Siantar. Pematang Siantar is situated 128 km. south-east of Medan.
For buying food and provisions we gave the patients Misman, Lukman, Fauzi Ali, Bambang Supriady en Fauzi Ali some pocket money; 100.000 rupiah per person.

Sister Bernadette from the St. Elisabeth hospital came in the afternoon with some families among them mrs. Taing Lubis, mrs. Koriah and mrs. Manalu.
Mrs. Manulu has here been a week before but then she very distressed. Now she came with her husband. They want to start a shop in salt, sugar and washing powder in Tarutung south of the Lake Toba. Maybe they will return sometime to Aceh, but for the time being they don't dare to go back out of fear for new earthquakes. Earlier this week there was an earthquake 6,2 on the scale of Richter in Banda Aceh.
We gave her 3 million rupiah for a shop and 1,5 million rp. for house rent. Together 4.500.000 rp.

Mrs. Koriah (muslima with veil) told she has been helped enormously by the nuns. She lost her husband, 3 children and he house and business. They had small restaurant. Everything very sad. Now she wants to start this up again. We gave her Rp.5.000.000.

Mrs. Taing Lubis is veterinarian and did work for the elephants training center in Lhokseumawe. till the political troubles stopped the tourist flow and the centre was closed. Now she works for the government as an ecologist (She studied in the Dutch town Wageningen) She lost two children. She is about 6 month pregnant. Her husband survived. She has been dragged along 3 km. by the mud stream and got much mud in her lungs. In a hospital in Kuala Lumpur they saved her live. She has broken ribs and has still much pain. With her unborn fetus everything is well. Also she lost everything; papers of the bank, the house, everything has disappeared. Also the business of her husband, a trade in bricks, wood and building materials including a truck is lost.
she has to go back to get new papers. Otherwise she has no income at all.
We gave her 1.000.000 for travel-costs (in stead of a bus trip, she needs an air flight because of her pregnancy and broken ribs), 2.000.000 Rp. for house rent for two month and 1.500.000 rp. for food etc.

Mrs. Oei got help from us before earlier. We have given her again an amount as pocket money and for investing in a bamishop. It is a honest woman, she told she also got some money from other persons. We gave her 1.500.000 rp.

Saturday 28 of February
In the morning we went to the Tembakau Deli hospital to speak about transfer of the patients to the rehabilitation center in Pematang Siantar. The doctor has no problem with departure of the patients to Pematang Siantar, but the administration does, appeared a little later. Permission was needed from the commander of the Tsunami-help center (Posko) at the airport. Through advise of sister Jeannette van Paassen of the Harapan Jaya rehabilitation center in Pematang Siantar we get by naming the right persons quick access to the help center.

In the afternoon we had a meeting with members of the local Lions about some of patients in the Tembacau Deli Hospital to decide who was going to help them.

Monday 28 of February
On this day our first tour in the morning was to the Malahayati Hospital. We should have there an appointment with a doctor to talk about a hip of one of our patients, and we should meet some members of the Lions who should take over the care of some of our patients. Also mrs. Roselyne of the Lions came there to us, she made the appointments with mrs Washington the manufacturer of the artificial legs. With mrs. Rosalyne we agreed that the patients should not go to the rehabilitation center before the legs were ready, because adapting them to the patients over such a distance was to difficult. The agreement was that the Lions should pay the artificial legs and that we should take over the patients when the artificial legs were made fitting. After dismissal of the patients from the hospital we should take care of rehabilitation coast, fysiotherapy and eventual courses for learning of another trade, compatible with their handicap. For that the patients should be brought to the rehabilitation center in Pematang Siantar then.

Next we visited mrs Warlisdah. She is a girl age 19, that lost her left eye in the tsunami. She has been transferred that same day to an eye clinic financed by the Lions. We gave her 100.000 rupiah pocket money.

After that we went to the Tembacau Deli Hospital. We had to explain to our patients that the voyage to Pematang Siantar should not take place yet. To the son of mr. Zahlum is given money for his study.

Tuesday March 1
Koos Blok has made up to date the administration and it appeared that the financed projects in February amount nearby € 10.000 compared to € 4000 in January. So there has been a fair turnover, against about 10 % performance costs. That means that 90% of the gifts comes directly to the victims.

Wednesday March 2
This day we went visiting some "old clients" to see how they fared. On 28 of February here arrived doctor John Jaeqx and his wife Magda who want to help victims of the tsunami on Nias. They accompanied us this day. Fate was unfavorable to us because mrs Suriaty (27 yrs.) was not at home. Next we went to the brothers Rizal, Sayuti, Zainuddin who want to start a business These three young men survived the tsunami by jumping on their motorbike quickly and driving away. Their parents did not survive the disaster. They could find them anywhere afterwards. But we could not find the young men now.

After that we went to mrs. Yap Siu Kien She is a widow 36 years old and has six children, from 16 years till 1 year old. After a long search we found here somewhere in the slums of Medan. She lives in a house that does not deserve that name. And she has to pay for it 4 million rupiah per year. Happily also the mission helped here and takes care of here. We gave her 200.000 rupiah and promised her to help if she wants to start a cake bakery.

Back in Namorambe sister Bernadette from the St. Elisabeth Hospital waited for us with a new aid-case. Also a women who lost everything. Mrs. Aniek (36 yrs.) lived with husband and three children and a brother in law and children (10 persons) in one house.
Only she and a nephew age 19 yrs. survived. Her houses is damaged, but she thinks it is possible to be repaired, (for 6,5 mil. Rp.). Her man had a job at a bank. She told us that she met with mrs. Koriah with whom she will start the restaurant. We gave her 5.000.000 rupiah to repair her house.

Thursday March 3.
This day we went with John and Marga Jaeqx to the Tembakau Deli Hospital. In the hospital dr. John Jaeqx looked to the patients. They were still not in a very good condition and the emergency operations were not done perfect. On the way back we drove to the Pharmacy of mrs. Suanni, to order medicine and food supplements for the patients.

Friday March 4
In the morning we collected the ordered medicines at the pharmacy for an amount of 668.000 rupiah.

Afterwards we went to a refugees house of the organisation Aceh Sepakat (Aceh Unity). There we were informed about which aid they give. This group appears to organize a lot for the people and we decided to support some parts of it. After that we drove to the Tembacau Deli Hospital to deliver the medicines and supplements.

Back in Namorambe pastor Budi waited for us with a aid-worker and a victim, mr. Tjia. Pastor Budi wants to rebuild a school in Aceh which has been washed away by the tsunami. The permits were already acquired and he asked us to finance the school banks and tables. We decided to let make 60 banks and tables for the present. These will be made in a factory were leper patients work. In this way two groups will be helped at the same time and we do support besides the tsunami victims also the leper victims.

Afterwards mr Mardi Tjia told about his mother. She lost many family members by the tsunami and in hearing the dramatic news she got an attaque out of fear. She had to be admitted to a hospital. Because the fee for help in nursing-homes is high mr Tjia had to make many debts. It is a poor man and we gave him 3.000.000 rupiah.

Saturday March 5
For the refugee house of the Aceh Sepakat group we promised aid for some projects, among them a playing garden for the children (of 2 till 6 years) and the embroidery group. We did not give cash money but did buy goods together with the people of the home we for an ample amount of 6 million rupiah.

On this day came a question of pastor James for aid to little entrepreneurs in Banda Aceh.
Koos Blok, who finished his mission and did fly back to the Netherlands on Sunday 6 March had a meeting about this with Marita Hovers on the last day of his stay here. Marita is the coordinator of the PUM on Sumatra. The PUM stands for Project Uitzending Managers and is financed by the Dutch Ministry of Economic affairs.
Koos shall in the Netherlands investigate and talk about this project further. The PUM shall possible setup a project in Banda Aceh for support to businesses.

TOP

Monday morning we fetched mr. Koos Blok from the airport as reinforcement of our relief-action. After a donation of the municipality Menterwolde in the Netherlands, we had email contact with mayor Feike Liemburg of this municipality.
Mr. Liemburg offered his help for the project. So we asked him or it was possible to send a volunteer to Medan with management experience.
The mayor approached Koos Blok as temporary aid for the project organization of the relief-action.
Koos Blok is just pre-pensioned. He did work for the Ministry of Economic Affairs. He will assist us for the time of one month.

Tuesday morning he went with our English interpreter to the Tembakau Deli Hospital. After getting some medical equipment's at the pharmacy of mrs. Suanni, they visited several patients and gave the necessary appliances.

A few patients can leave the hospital on Friday and go home. That only means to their original place of residence, because of many the house has gone. 7 patients still wait on follow up treatments: pins or plates for stabilizing fractures or adapting artificial legs.

To three patients are handed over the appliances delivered by mrs Suanni.

On Tuesday afternoon we spoke with mrs Noor. She is a pharmacist but has now an important function at the health-department in Medan. orphans from Aceh To her money is handed over for five children, who lost their parents and four brothers and sisters. The money is for 1 year house rent and school fee and cost of living for a period of 6 month. Mrs. Noor shall give the money to the oldest girl. Her two older brothers are still to much in shock to know what they want to do. On Thursday afternoon we gave travel money to a woman laying in the Tembakau Deli Hospital with a large skin transplant after flesh wound. In fact the travel seemed to dangerous to us, but she says that there is a hospital in here residence far south of Banda Aceh and that they can take over the treatment, so she left for home with the bus. (While she was visiting her family in Banda Aceh she was hit by the tsunami. )

Mrs. Noor has also ideas about building a house for orphans. From the Foundation "Vrije School" in Utrecht and the Foundation "De Heuvelrug" we have got the question about possibilities of a orphanage. So we will be a inter-mediator in between. We think of an orphanage regardless of their creed. Mrs. Noor, moslima herself, support this thought strongly.

Friday we have been to the hospital Harapan Jaya in Pematang Siantar to talk to sister Jeannette van Paassen. She is director of the rehabilitation hospital of the mission.
